Kalydon Cultural Association

Gina Xanthaki is a founding member and president of the Kalydon Cultural Association, based in the village of Plaka, which belongs to the local community of Vrouha in Agios Nikolaos, Crete.

The aims of the association are to protect and highlight the history of the island of Spinalonga and the cultural heritage of Plaka. The association emphasizes the protection of the natural environment in the area, as well as the preservation and promotion of the traditional character of the village of Plaka.

The Kalydon Cultural Association embraces culture through a series of events, such as the exhibition by renowned artist Costas Tsoclis titled “You, the Last Leper”, which was held in Spinalonga and offered a unique experience to the visitors. Through artworks, constructions and artistic interventions, Costas Tsoclis conveyed to the public the atmosphere of the 1903-1957 period when the island functioned as a leper colony.

The Cultural Association aims to create a Museum – Information Center for Spinalonga, welcoming visitors to the area – which in recent years has become an extremely popular tourist destination internationally – and offering them a unique cultural experience.
